3rd Birthday Party

Last Saturday we celebrated Elise's 3rd birthday with a family birthday party.  In honor of Elise's favorite stuffed animal (as noted in previous posts!!), we had a 'Boppy' lamb theme gathering.
Everyone had lamb place cards....
It turns out that it's hard to just buy lamb party items when it's not Easter so it morphed a bit into a farm theme-- guess it's not fair to leave out the other animals.

Present time! We started the party with presents... afterall, what three year old wants to wait?
Then it was time for dinner. We made homemade Stromboli's (meatball and green olives along with pepperoni and black olives), salad and fruit salsa with cinnamon and sugar tortilla chips. The birthday girl didn't eat very much as the appetizer hour beforehand was quite filling.

Nana and I made a lamb cake... using Elise's great, great grandmother's mold. It was quite a chore getting it out after it was baked. The mold was supposed to form a lamb that could sit upright. After prying out all the little pieces, we decided that it was best for our lamb to lay down. The nice thing about it being broken that it was already precut! After frosting it together, the final result wasn't too bad.
Nana attempting to piece our cake together... with our tortilla chips cooling in the background.
What a mess but look... not too bad in the end!!!!

Elise was fixated on eating our cake... but promptly forgot about it when the ice cream was served. She's an ice cream girl at heart.

Afterwards the boys cleaned up.

What happened next was something for the history books. We had a dance party. By dance party, I mean everyone danced! It first started with Elise and I (because we both can dance anywhere at anytime) on the dance floor followed by Pops. Before you knew it, all the grandparents, Aunt Amy and Uncle Chris were showing off their moves to Devo's 'Whip It'. It was a general consensus that we repeat this every year... afterall, Elise is known as the 'Tiny Dancer'. Ok, maybe not everyone wants to make this an annual event but I'm voting that we do...

Not sure what dance move this is.....

I've attempted to post a video... I'm not sure if it will play or not- a work in progress.

Brutus and Garth

I wrestled with whether or not I should post our dog news on Elise's blog-- but after much consideration, I decided to. This stems from the fact that Brutus and Garth are as much a part of our family as Elise is. Their health and happiness are intertwined with ours.

As I eluded to, only Garth travelled with us over Christmas. The week prior to Christmas, we had noticed that he began drink more water than usual and then one day, he refused to eat. This obviously is not normal Garth behavior. Prior to his old age, he would have to eat with tennis balls in his food dish to slow down his eating! So, the vet visits began--

After a physical, blood and urine analysis it was determined that Garth had beginning stages of kidney failure. The vet put it more mildly-- he had kidney disease. So, we switched foods to a prescription kidney friendly diet in hopes that this would lower the toxins in his blood. However, with a blood recheck, the toxins were higher. So, even though Garth is in good spirits, back with a healthy appetite, we now supplement his food with medication. In another month, we will once again recheck this. If we are able to keep the toxins in check, he should continue to live a long and healthy life. As long as a thirteen and a half year old lab will.

Now, Brutus. My dear Brutus. Around New Years, he too was starting to drink more water. Assuming that he would be diagnosed with the same problem, we brought him into the vet for the same urinalysis and blood analysis.

His first blood test came back that he had an extraordinary about of calcium (which the vet later told was the highest she's ever seen during her thirty-four years of practice). Being that calcium is an indicator for cancer, we did an additional blood test that was sent to Michigan State. The day we sent out for the blood test, Brutus stopped eating. He wasn't interested in anything- canned food, peanut butter, homemade chicken and rice. And, he lost his spunk. He spent the next several days sleeping, laying around and no longer following us around the house or jumping on visitors that came over. He was officially very sick. And he began to vomit.

Over the 6 days we waited for the results, he went from losing weight to 2 days of the 'old' Brutus. His appetite returned along with his energy. We had hope.

Then on Monday, it happened again... not eating, vomiting, the sleeping. We feared the worst. It shouldn't have come as a surprise when the vet called on Tuesday afternoon but it was... cancer. Most likely lymphoma. She continued on about going to Michigan to find out what type of cancer so we could begin chemotherapy but Brutus was already giving up the fight. It wouldn't have been fair to subject him to treatment when there is no cure-- when it would have only been for us. He was too good of a best friend to do that to.

So, yesterday, January 10th, we put Brutus down. It was the hardest thing Jeff and I have ever done. He was with us from the very beginning... we adopted him the first week we moved to town... our first week together. He was there for everything-- including adopting Garth and the birth of Elise.

The next hardest thing about yesterday was telling Elise. I had purchased a book when Brutus first stopped eating and we sent the his blood off to Michigan. The book is called Dog Heaven. So, the hour before we took Brutus in, while I waited for Jeff to come from work-- I read her the book.  She had known that our beloved guy was sick... but we were lucky enough to have a vet to send him to Heaven. In heaven, dogs can run, run and run. Dogs can swim and chase geese (bet he's doing that right now). Dogs sleep on clouds. Dogs get to play with angel children and eat dog biscuits in funny shapes like squirrels and ice cream cones. She understood that Brutus had to move away from us so he could feel better.

Last night when she went to bed, she asked if Brutus could hear us. We said he could. Before naptime today, she said in her sweet voice 'I love you Brutus'. Guess that sums it up...

The Rainbow Bridge

inspired by a Norse legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

The Holidays and Birthday 3!!

Blink. The holidays are over. Funny how that happens when I spend over a month preparing and anticipating their arrival.  They come and go so quickly...

It truly has been a whirlwind!

Christmas eve was spent hosting the Kaisers at our house.. first holiday in our new home. It felt nice to pull out the china and sit in the dining room (why don't we do that more often?!). Elise enjoyed opening her gifts, my gifts, daddy's gifts-- ok, she wasn't picky! Any gift would do!

After putting out milk and cookies for Santa, Elise went to bed.

Wouldn't you know it but Santa paid us a visit-- of course he enjoyed our snack. Elise opened her Santa present. She had previously asked Santa for a 'Boppy' (apparently one stuffed lamb isn't enough). He obliged her request and now she is an owner of 'New Boppy'. This isn't to be confused with 'Old Boppy'.

On a side note, we also gave Elise a real vacuum cleaner. She loves it. Wait, I guess that was a gift for me! Nevermind!

Later Christmas morning we drove to Medina... only bringing Garth who wasn't feeling well (more on this next time). Santa was nice again to grace us with his presence. Afterall, wasn't he super tired from delivering gifts?! He's a bigger trooper than I would be!

New Years was spent at home. Jeff and Elise were nursing bad colds. At least we were able to stay out of the Emergency Room this year. We did end up having to give Elise a few breathing treatments-- at least we had that nebulizer from the ER.

January 4th ushered in Elise's birthday and her first day of Preschool! We'd been preparing for the day with reminders that 'Mommy will come back' and 'Don't forget to cover your mouth when you cough' and other things that come into play when you are out at school. Even after going to bed the night before at 7pm (lucky duck!), we had to wake our Sleeping Beauty the next morning in order to make it out the door on time.

Elise wore a new outfit (wasn't that the best part of your first day at school?!) and sported a cute little backpack. She was ready to rumble at 8:45!

At school, there were a few tears (hers, not ours). We said our goodbyes and left our little girl to learn important things. Hard to believe that we are shaping her to be that NASA scientist, architect, or dentist (I had to throw that in there for Jeff). I'm envious of her open possibilities and young mind!! What a blank canvas!

Here we are posing with Elise's teacher, Miss Gail. Elise wouldn't look at the camera since she was already starting to cry. But, you can see that Miss Gail doesn't look like a mean, scary person! Elise quit crying shortly after we left. All was well!

Information about what Elise did on the first day of school! We get an update every day.

By the time I came back to pick Elise up, she didn't want to leave and go home. Luckily there will be more school days! On her second day of school (Thursday) there were less tears! Soon, we'll be over the hump and Elise will be happy to have us take her school-- well, at least that's the plan!

After a birthday dinner of pizza, Elise blew out her candles. It was nice to spend the evening home and relaxing. We are having a family birthday get together next weekend. There will definitely be singing, dancing and an altogether wild time. Afterall, the grandparents will be there! Hopefully the neighbors won't call the police!

Happy 3rd birthday Elise! May all your wishes come true!
